MASHA QRELLA

– TAZ

ANNI ROSSI

Anni Rossi is a songwriter, producer and performance maker from Minnesota, currently living in Brooklyn, New York. Her music spans multiple genres and draws from elements of folk, indie, Americana, classical music and R&B. She has released several critically acclaimed EPs and albums, including 2009’s Rockwell, which was recorded in Chicago with engineer Steve Albini and released internationally by British record label 4AD. She is notable for writing and performing with an electric viola that was handcrafted from a tree branch by her friend and former Swans percussionist Thor Harris. In 2014, she was commissioned by the Whitney Museum as a composer and performer of The Berlin Sun Theater inc ollaboration with award-winning Marxist anthropologist Michael Taussig. She premiered a new solo performance piece in July 2018 called Watertower Dreams at the Redeye Theater in Minneapolis. It was a hybrid experimentation of original songs, musical improvisation and an array of characters which were all performed by Rossi. Her latest offering, House on the Seaside, was recorded and co-produced by Best Coast guitarist Bobb Bruno at his Yeti’s Lair studio in Eagle Rock, California. It comes after a series of mixtapes on which Rossi experimented with different recording techniques and musical styles, blending R&B music, tape recordings and prank phone calls. Seaside is a fusion of Rossi’s musical past and present, mixing her unconventional way of playing her electric viola with a vocal style that nods towards modern R&B and the great jazz singers of the twentieth century.

“Rossi demonstrates how stunning music can be when kept stark and simple” — Pitchfork 8.0

“She stays on the move, with uncertainty wherever she alights!” — New York Times

“You can’t teach a mind to write and perform songs this way” — Paste Magazine / Daytrotter
